Jeanne Barker July Open

15th July 2015

We hope you all enjoyed the July Open Meet on Sunday 12th July at Parkside Pools. As you will be aware, we named the event in honour of long-serving coach and volunteer, Jeanne Barker. We were very lucky to have Jeanne there to present the medals to the swimmers which gave the Club the opportunity to thank her for her huge contribution to swimming not only at the Club but also the wider region. CoCSC President and Olympian, Christine Illman and Head Coach James Freezer, supported by Top Squad swimmers Susanna Fraser and Levin Graf, presented Jeanne with a framed programme cover showing some vintage pictures of her early swimming years alongside one of the Meet's gold medals.

The success of the event reflected the hard work and dedication of our wonderful Open Meets Coordinator, Kate Coleman, over the past few months supported by our Committee, coaches and volunteers - thank you all.

CoCSC Success at the LC British Masters

3rd July 2015

The British Masters was held at The Manchester Aquatic Centre over the weekend of June 12th- 14th. CoCSC had a small entry but still managed collect 2 Gold and one Silver medals over the weekend.

Kathryn Loveys started her weekend with a gold medal in the 100m Breaststroke swimming in the very competitive 25-29 years old age group. She continued this form in the Saturday Evening session taking Gold in the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 36.14.

In the last session of the meet (always tough) she was again swimming well and picked up a silver medal to the 200m Breaststroke stopping the clock at 2:55.20. In between time she swam in the 50m & 100m Free and although not picking up any medals made some good times.

Juliet Whitaker swimming in her first long course gala for quite a few years swam in the 50m, 100m & 200m. Again the times were very competitive in her age group putting in some great performances in the pool.

This year’s Short Course Championships will take place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield from 23 - 25 October.

Masters National Long Course Success

21st June 2014

Although Cambridge numbers were a bit thin on ground, there were some commendable swims at the National Masters Long Course event in Swansea 13-15th June 2014.

Lizzy Perkins, one of Cambridge's rising stars put in a solid performance within the 17-24 age category. She claimed 3 silvers (100 free, 50 breast and 50 free) and 1 bronze (100 breast). The remarkable thing about Lizzy's success is that it comes from just a year of training with the University and City teams after years away from swimming. Watch this space, as there is more yet to come from Lizzy!

Liam Barnett also had a good weekend. In the 25-29 age category he won 1 gold (100 breast), 3 silvers (50 & 100 fly, 100 back) and 1 bronze (50 back). Liam also recorded 4 new East Region Masters Records in the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast and 50 back.

With only two swimmers representing the club, Masters Coach Simon Morley is keen for more Masters and Senior swimmers to swim competitively. The perfect opportunity will come around in the form of the Short Course National Masters in Sheffield 24-26th October 2014. It is a really good event that caters for all and is always good fun. So get training, so we can celebrate more Cambridge success!

Cambridge Girls Shine for Cambs at Inter-County Champs

10th July 2013

Sunday 7th July 2013, Inspire Luton Sports Village. Sixteen swimmers from City of Cambridge Swimming Club were chosen to represent Cambridgeshire at the Inter-County Championships.

With teams representing the five other east region counties: Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, the gala took place over 50 events including 16 relays in age groups from 11/12 years to 17yrs and Over.

Kate Little continued her current impressive form winning the individual 13/14 yrs Women’s 100m Breaststroke and coming a close second in the 100m Butterfly. Then with her team mates, Lauren Hall, Emily Biggs and Mollie Allen from Peterborough, the girls completely dominated their relays winning both the Medley and Freestyle races with confidence.

Not to be outdone by the girls, the Men’s 17yrs/Over relay teams also won both their Medley and Freestyle relays with Cambridge swimmers, Liam Doonan and Luke Westwood putting in very strong individual legs in each one.

The Cambridge swimmers’ confidence and experience in relays also shone in the11/12yr age groups. Hetti Vanterpool and Saskia Malhotra swam for the girls coming a very close second to Essex in both their Medley and Freestyle relays. For the boys Levin Graf and Jake Moxham came back from a disappointing handover in the Medley relay to finish a close second in the Freestyle. The 13/14yr boys team with Tom Harrington from Cambridge secured second in the Freestyle relay.

Individually for the boys Luke Westwood had the best result coming in second in the 100m Breaststroke.

Final results were: Essex won with 239 points, Cambridgeshire came second with 211 points, Suffolk 197 points, Hertfordshire 144, Bedfordshire 131, Norfolk 126.

Ben Negus, City of Peterborough Head Coach and Cambridgeshire ASA Team Manager commented” The team made my job very easy and were a great group on the day. This is the best result for Cambridgeshire since at least 2009 as we have come either 5th or 6th every year since. We were up against two National First Division Counties, Hertfordshire and Essex. Here’s looking forward to building on this for next year and beyond”.

Cambridge swimmers included: Hetti Vanterpool, Saskia Malhotra, Levin Graf, Jake Moxham, Lauren Hall, Emily Biggs, Kate Little, Tom Harrington, Georgia Crawford, Ashley Trent, Dan Mills, Boris Ledovski, Dani Rayner, Samantha Auker, Liam Doonan and Luke Westwood.

New East Region Records plus Gold and Silver for Masters Transplant Swimmer

9th July 2013

ASA East have confirmed that Liam Barnett, Masters Squad swimmer with the City of Cambridge Swimming Club has set three new East Region records in the Master 24-29 age group category. His first record was set in the Long Course Masters Open at Luton where he swam the 200m Individual Medley in 2:21.06. The next two records and the two medals were then won at the Long Course National Championships in Plymouth. He won gold for his 200m Individual Medley, narrowly missing his record breaking time with 2:22.07. Then he set a new record in the 100m Butterfly of 1:01.58 winning silver. Finally he set a new record of 2:06.26 for the 200m Freestyle. For Liam these records are great but only a stepping stone towards his goal of winning medals at this summer’s World Transplant Games to be held in Durban, South Africa. In the summer of 2011 Liam suffered liver failure and was lucky enough to receive a donor liver and have a full transplant at Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge. Just one year later he won 4 gold medals in the British Transplant Games and earned his place to represent GB in World Games.

City get off to a Flyer

2nd November 2012

City of Cambridge Swimming Club started the 2012/13 season in convincing manner with victory in the first round of the East Midlands Arena League.

The team were determined to get off to a good start and with just six weeks of hard training under their belts since the summer break were keen to make their mark at their home event.

A series of fine individual wins helped City of Cambridge take top spot, with the club claiming a total of 30 wins, nine second-place finishes and five third-place finishes. The club also performed well in the relay events, winning 12 out of a possible 16.

There were many eye-catching performances but particularly impressive wins came from Harry Robinson (under-15 boys’ 100m freestyle), Liam Doonan (open 100m butterfly), Dale Waterhouse (open 100m freestyle), Emily Biggs (under-13 girls’ 100m breaststroke), Molly Ollington (under-15 girls’ butterfly) and Megan Connor (open 100m freestyle).

Head coach James Freezer was delighted with his team’s efforts but knows there is a long way to go in this competition.

"I was pleased with the strength in depth in the relays but the team will have much tougher rounds ahead," he said. "We still need to improve in certain areas if we want to cement our place as one of the strongest teams in this league after such a successful run last season. There is nothing standing in the way of the result we want except honest hard work."

Result: 1 Cambridge 259pts, 2 Dereham 186, 3 Biggleswade 163, 4 Worksop Dolphins 159, 5 West Norfolk 141, 6 Norwich 134.

In a field that included 7 International Swimmers and 2 Olympians , the club finished in 10th place in the B final, giving them the overall position of 20th in the 2011/12 National League.

The final consisted of 50 events, 16 of which were team races. The 13 yrs and under age group swimmers performed outstandingly well with the boys finishing 4th in the 200m Freestyle relay and 5th in the 200m Individual Medley relay. The 13 and under girls also did well with a 5th place in their 200m Individual Medley. The 9 to 11year boys were placed 6th in their 200m Freestyle relay with the girls also coming 6th in their 200m Individual Medley. In the Open (16+) age group the boys finished 6th in the 300m Freestyle relay and the 200m Individual Medley relay, the girls finished in 7th in the Individual Medley relay.

Individual performances of note included Kate Little winning the 13 and under 100m Breaststroke, Harry Robinson’s 3rd place in the 100m 13 and under boys Freestyle, Alex Harrison competing in the Women’s Open (16+) category came 3rd in three events including the 100m Breaststroke, 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley. The rest of the team swam extraordinarily well with many achieving personal bests beyond expectations.

James Freezer, Head Coach said “The whole team did themselves proud, with an outstanding team spirit and performance throughout the event especially considering the outstanding opposition with many International swimmers being involved such as James Goddard, Ieuan Liyod who will represent GB in Olympics this summer”.

“It was fantastic to see the parents really get behind the team and this really had a positive effect on the swimmers and spurred them on”.

“The club has come a long way in such a short space of time”, Freezer continues, “ We gained promotion to the Division 1 of the Eastern Midlands league one month before I joined the club three years ago. The following year we finished mid-table, pushing up to 5th last year. From that to making it to the National finals is a great achievement. We must now look to make this a regular occurrence and improve on this result in future years ahead”.

The parents and supporters may still be struggling with their voices as despite representing the smallest club in the final, managed to win the award for Best Supporters with their relentless enthusiasm, blue wigs, flags and cheers. “The atmosphere was absolutely amazing”, said Sue Burton, parent and member of the club executive committee, “each club had come dressed up to support their team. We chanted and cheered until we had no voices left. The kids swam brilliantly”.

The Club Executive Committee would like to thank the event team especially Ann Auker and Rachel Kerridge for all their efforts.

Masters Nationals Success

3rd November 2009

The club had 18 individual swimmers plus one, swimming in the relays at the Nationals at Sheffield 2 weekends ago. Our medal haul was 4 golds, 5 silver and 5 Bronze this being made up of two bronze medals in the relays and the 12 Individual medals. This was a great result and demonstrates how the masters are progressing. Geoff Thwaites was the star with 4 golds in the 50m, 100m and 200m Breast and 400m FS. Son Ian had 3 silvers in the 50m, 100m Back and 100m FS and 1 bronze in the 50 FS. Luke Westwood had 2 Silver medals in the 200m Breast and 200m IM. Andrea Viola had a bronze in the 200m Breast and Alan Wallace a bronze in the 200m Back. We also had 2 bronze medals in the ladies 72+ 4 X 50m FS relay and the mixed 72+ 4 x 50m IM.

Most swimmers achieved at least one PB with Steve Buckley & Vince Pottier and Luke Westwood having PBs in all their swims. All in all a pretty good weekend for the club and a big thanks to Stu for the coaching and the great job he does sorting everybody and doing timed sprints, getting splits Etc, even when, on one ocassion, we had 3 swimmers in one pool and one in the other pool swimming at the same time! He looked more shattered than the swimmers by Sunday afternoon.

More Waterpolo Success

24th January 2008

Congratulations to Adam Oakman who has become the 3rd Cambridge Junior player in as many months to be scouted by the Great British Waterpolo team.

Adam has been invited to attend the GB training camp during Feburary half term. We all wish him luck for the tough week ahead of him!

It has been a good week for the Cambridge Juniors with 3 games and 3 very convincing victories. They won the Deben tournament on Saturday night beating Deben 13-0 and Ipswich 10-1. They then followed this up with an excellent performance against Magdelene college winning 16-0. They continue their unbeaten season against the University men's 'A' team next week. This will be a real challenge for the smaller and less experienced Junior team.

Good luck lads and well done Adam.
