JFL and Thetford Open Meet

By Vix Metcalf

11th February 2004

We came second in the Junior Fenland League. 32 out of the 36 individual
swims were personal bests (89%) although there were a few disqualifications.
These were all down to lack of racing experience. The team spirit was good
as well. Notable performances to pick out:

Sophie Lanham a 2 second personal best in the 50 fly and a great swim
Andrew Thompson 3 seconds off the 100 Im to win convincingly Max Macauley
Leak a gutsy swim in his first 50 fly Alex Nixon 34 seconds for the first
time in the 50 free to win Harriet Thorpe 3 second personal best to win
the 50 brst, Jenni Corbett 3 second personal best in the 50 free despite
her goggles falling off, Chris Budd- oustanding 50 fly swim, a 3 second
pb and won it by miles! Alex Garner a 4 second pb in the 50 bc (which he
bettered the next day at Thetford by a further 2 seconds) Ross Dunsmore
a 3 second pb in his first outing for the club (50 fly) Everyone in the
squadron relay as we won by a length! (Craig Collier, Chloe Solomou, Alex
Garner, Sophie Lanham, Alex Nixon, Victoria Way, Adam Scott, Storm Macauley-Leak)

Thetford was a good open meet but there was a lot of hanging about between
swims. A lot of the children won trophies but they did not have the results
ready when i left so their positions and results are getting sent to the
pool. Here are the results that I do know:

Douglas Gordon and James Rumbelow- their hard training is starting to
pay off, and their race tactics are improving! Craig Collier swam 4 personal
bests and collected 5 trophies! Hayley Chandler an 8 second pb in the 100
brst David Middleton 12 second pb in the 100 IM, and Craig Collier a 14
second pb in the same event! Amy Dive 2 100 IM personal bests in 2 days,
Alex Garner as stated above for his 50 bc, Adele Cliff for some great swims
and a great attitude at the gala. Cody Duncan 39 (39.88) for the first
time on his 50 bc and a much improved butterfly (technique)swim (2.5 second
pb)

I think I have picked out the better swims, but I felt that all of the
kids really need to be congratulated on their improving attitudes to warming
up, racing and discipline, as well as their swimming!
