Some of Cambridge’s youngest swimmers stepped out for the March Marlins Trophy Gala – and managed a whopping 34 personal bests out of 39 events!
The City of Cambridge Swimming Club selected almost all its competitors from the development and foundation squads, giving many of them their first chance to race.
Seven swimmers claimed first places with their PBs with Adam Scott leading the way in two events, the 12 and under 50m fly (43.38)and the same age freestyle (33.89). Chris Budd, Michelle Page-Croft, Katherine Budd, Andrew Thompson and Tarryn Hodgkiss also finished first on PBs.
There were yet more PBs for James Rumbelow, Emily Thorpe, Huw Middleton, Chloe Solomou, David Middleton, Harriet Thorpe, James Gallagher, Cody Duncan, Zoe Korniotis, Alex Nixon, Victoria Way, Karina Page, Alexi Solomou, Tara Watkins, Zoe Othieno, Charlotte Last, Ben Firman, Emma Rooke, Steven Kirkup, Megan Adams, Luke Westwood and Andriana Korniotis.
Some of those PBs came during the exciting climax to the event, the squadron relay, which saw Cambridge setting a blistering pace to finish ahead of the rest of the field.
Development coach Vix Metcalf said: “All but five of the swims were personal bests, which shows how much effort the squad put in. Six of our swimmers were competing for the first time, and they did extremely well.”
She added: “I was a little disappointed that two of the other clubs seemed to have selected swimmers who would normally compete at a higher level.”
