181 Medals for Cambridge in the County Champs 2012

March 2012, the annual Cambridgeshire County Swimming Championships took place over 3 weekends and 3 locations including Cambridge, Peterborough and Corby. Swimmers drawn from the 12 competitive swimming clubs across the county battled it out over 34 individual swimming events and 16 team relays.

75 swimmers from Cambridge, 33 boys and 42 girls had all reached the required qualifying times to compete in the five galas which make up the county championships.

9/10 age group results

George Whisken (9) dominated the youngest age group boys races with 1st place finishes in all the individual medley races (100, 200 and 400m) and 200m races in backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Jordan Bradford (9) came second behind him in the 200m backstroke. Joshua Borrett (10) won silver for his 100m backstroke, bronze in the 200m backstroke, 200m and 400m freestyle and also won bronze in final of the 50m breaststroke. Jake Moxham won bronze in the final of the 50m backstroke. For the girls Laura Hill (10) won silver in the 100m breaststroke and Emily Semple (9) won bronze for her 100m individual medley.

11/12 age group results

Oliver Trent (11) won an impressive 13 medals, including 9 golds for 100m breaststroke and backstroke, 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and all the individual medley events (100m, 200m and 400m). With silver’s for 200m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle and bronze medals in 100m freestyle and the finals of the 50m breaststroke. Levin Graff won gold for the 200m freestyle, silver for 100m and 200m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 100m and 200m individual medley and bronze for his 100m backstroke. For the 12 year old boys Charles Fynn won silver in the final of the 50m freestyle and 200m butterfly and bronze in the final of the 50m backstroke. For the girls, Dale Bean (11) won bronze for 400m individual medley.

The competition for places between the 12 year old Cambridge girls was tight with 27 medals being won between 5 girls. Kate Little won 12 medals in total including: the 50m sprints in breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Her silver medals came in the 100m butterfly and freestyle, 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley. Bronze medals came in the 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 400m individual medley and in the final of the 50m backstroke. Millie Emmans success was also impressive with 10 medals including: gold in 400m and 800m freestyle, silvers for 200m butterfly and freestyle and 400m individual medley, bronze in the 100m butterfly and freestyle, 200m breaststroke and individual medley and in the final of the 50m butterfly. Nell Bullard (12) did well in the distance freestyle races winning silver in the 400m and bronze in the 800m. Sophia Rodrigues won her silver medal in the final of the 50m butterfly.

13/14 age group results

Fifteen gold medals were won in the 13/14 year old age group with Rebecca Burton (13) winning 6 in total for 100m breaststroke and backstroke, 100m and 200m individual medley, 200m breaststroke and in the final of the 50m breaststroke. Her five silver medals were won in 100m butterfly and freestyle, 400m individual medley and 200m backstroke and the final of the 50m breaststroke with a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly.

Ashley Trent (14) won 3 golds in the 100m individual medley and breaststroke and 200m breaststroke. In the finals of the 50m sprints he came second in the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Bronze medals came in the 200, 400 and 1500m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley.

Sam Pedder (13) won gold in the 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke, with 6 silver medal wins in the 100 and 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle and 100 and 200m individual medley. He completed his medal collection with 2 bronze medals in the 100 and 400m freestyle.

Bartu Atamert (14) won gold in the final of the 50m breaststroke, silver medals for 100m breaststroke and 100m individual medley. Daniel Mills (14) won gold for 100m freestyle and bronze for 100m individual medley. Joshua Goncalves (14) won gold for 100m breaststroke, silver for 400m freestyle and individual medley and bronze for 100m butterfly, 200m breaststroke and 200m freestyle. Solomon Giesler (13) won gold for his 100m freestyle and bronze for 100m breaststroke and individual medley.

Robert Brunton (13) won five medals in total including two silver medals for the 100m and 200m butterfly races and three bronze for the 200 and 400m individual medley and 200m backstroke.

Lauren Hall (13) won 4 bronze medals for her 100m backstroke, 400 and 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Harry Robinson (13) went all out to win silver in the 1500m freestyle with Thomas Harrington (13) behind him to take the bronze. Thomas also won bronze for the 100m backstroke. Also winning silver was Alexandra Holt in the final of the 50m breaststroke. Eleanor Johnson won bronze in the 100m individual medley.

15/16 year age group

The 15/16 year age group are now a very experienced group of swimmers who are ready for all the challenges that the counties can bring. Richard Jefferies (16) dominated his age category with a total medal haul of 8 golds, (100m back, breast, free, butterfly: 200m free and 100, 200 and 400 individual medley). In the sprint finals (50m) he won silver for backstroke, freestyle and butterfly and also silver for 200m backstroke. Boris Ledovskih (15) won 3 golds in 100 and 1500m freestyle and the 200m individual medley. Boris also won 3 silver medals for 200m backstroke and 200 and 400m freestyle and 2 additional bronze medals for the 100m backstroke and 100m individual medley. Liam Doonan (15) also won 3 golds for the 100m in breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley.

Annie Little (15) swam well for the girls with a gold medal finish in the 50m breaststroke final and gold for the 200m breaststroke. Collecting silver for the 100m breaststroke and 100m individual medley. Sophie Lankford (16) won her gold for the 200m individual medley, silver for 200m individual medley and bronze for 100m breaststroke. Other girls winning silver and bronze included: Georgia Crawford (15) silver for 100 and 200m freestyle and bronze for 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. Samantha Auker (16), silver for 200m backstroke and 800m freestyle and bronze for 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle.

Sebastian Pettican (15) won 8 medals in total including 3 silver for 100m backstroke, 100m individual medley and 1500m freestyle. His 5 bronze medals came in the 100m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 100, 200 and 400 freestyle.

17 and over age group

In the oldest age group category, Ho-On To (23) won silver in the final of the 50m breaststroke and 100m breastroke. Adam Tapley (17) won silver for 200m freestyle and Alex Garner (18) won a bronze for the 200m individual medley.

What’s next?

For all our county swimmers the next stage will be to see if their times now qualify them for the regional or even national championships.
