City swimmers clinch first place

While Britain’s best were slogging it out for national swimming titles at Cambridge Parkside Pools, the city’s future hopes were fighting for first place in the latest Junior Fenland League round.

And the City of Cambridge squad, aged from nine to 13, swam to victory at the Deepings gala on Saturday– but it was a closely fought battle, with a lead of just one point.

Grantham took them all the way to the line, finishing at 139 points to Cambridge’s 140, while home team Deepings claimed third place with 136. Wisbech came in at 107 and Boston A was fifth.

The young Cambridge team achieved 13 first places, nine seconds and a flurry of thirds, with squad members racking up a blistering 13 personal bests.

Team coach Elaine Hill said: “The team worked very hard and performed extremely well – it was a very exciting gala with the first three teams so closely matched.”
