County Masters Championships

8th July 2002

A successful evening's swimming saw the Cambridge masters team of 6 swimmers win a stack of medals at the Cambridgeshire County Masters Championships, held at the Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey.

The Team's best result of the evening cam in the mixed 4x50 medley relay. Out of touch with the leaders at the half way stage, strong swims form Allyson Williams on the fly and a storming anchor leg from Kim Winwood put the team in gold medal position with just a few metres of the race left. This won the gold medal and the John Fresher Cup. In the individual races, both Kim and Allyson, set PB's on the way to several medal placings in the 25-29 age group

l-r: Allyson Williams, Kim Winwood, John Cochrane, Killian O'Byrne and Steve Buckley

Top individual performer was Steve Buckley who recorded a PB in the 100 free of 58.69 on his way to 4 titles, as he won the 50 free, 50 fly and 100 IM in the 25-29 Age group. Killian O'Byrne didn't let him have it all his own way however, pipping Steve to the touch for the second year running in the 50m free event to take gold in the 30-34 age band in a PB time of 27.11. He also picked up a second gold in the 50 fly. Andy Fenn posted a strong time of just over a minute in his first competitive 100 free since his return to swimming, to pick up silver in the 25-29 group. He has his eyes firmly set on a 59 come the Cambridge Open Meet in two weeks. John Cochrane was his usual consistent self, again winning medals in every event he contested, this time with golds in the 50m back and breast and the 100IM.
